Executive Summary
Peaceprints is based in Buffalo, NY one of the most segregated cities in America, where 81% of all individuals returning to Erie County from incarceration end up re-incarcerated. This recidivism rate is higher than both the national and state average. In an effort to disrupt and mitigate this cycle of incarceration, Peaceprints serves justice-impacted individuals and their families by providing wraparound interventions. The result is that only 9% of clients experience further justice involvement.
Case managers work with clients while they are still incarcerated in the local jails, providing job-readiness training, cognitive behavioral therapy, and goal planning so that when the client is released into the community, a relationship of trust is already established. Peaceprints positions the clients as leaders in their own goal setting as team members offer intensive case management for a year upon release to help the client navigate systems and remain accountable. With clients leveraging their existing strengths and receiving services aligned with their stated priorities, they are able to alter their circumstances and achieve long-term independence and stability. Common services include family reunification, securing stable housing, achieving gainful employment, connecting to medical/mental health/substance use disorder treatment, education attainment and more.
Team members of Peaceprints, many of whom have been incarcerated themselves, and/or identify with groups that have historically been targeted by and overrepresented in the criminal justice system, are advocates for their clients within their own networks and in intentional interactions with employers, service providers, neighbors, landlords, educational institutions, politicians, and the criminal justice system.
