Executive Summary

Word In Black and News is Out are more than just news outlets reporting on issues impacting Black and Queer communities. They are collaborative efforts started by 10 leading local Black publishers in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and six leading LGBTQ+ publishers as anti-LGBTQ legislation is on the rise in states across the country.

These publishers have a long legacy of serving Black and LGBTQ+ communities. Their brands are trusted far more than mainstream media. Some have been publishing for more than 130 years, such as The AFRO, Maryland’s oldest Black-owned business. They are also small businesses with limited resources. They want to cover so many important issues impacting Black and LGBTQ+ communities, but budget challenges hinder their ability to dive into the increasing number of attacks and inequities.

Word In Black has a staff of 11 journalists; 100% are Black. That is in addition to the 50+ journalists employed by the 10 publishers. News is Out has two journalists, both LGBTQ+, in addition to the 25+ employed by the six publishers. These reporters provide an authentic voice through their lived experiences, in a way that mainstream media simply cannot do.

By reporting and covering topics such as educational inequities, social justice, and healthcare disparities, this work serves as a source of information and education that can empower individuals to advocate for themselves and their communities. The goal is to impact change by practicing solutions journalism that improves the well-being of Black and Queer communities.
