Executive Summary
Australia is the world's sixth largest country by size with a small population of 26 million dispersed across metropolitan, regional, and remote areas. Equitable outcomes for all Australian children and families are severely lacking, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and those living in remote areas. Rural and remote communities are chronically underserved and underrepresented in family support.
Leveraging the Australian Playgroup Network, this project will connect socially and physically isolated families to evidence-based parent-child playgroups. Play is a fundamental human right, and is critical to early brain building, family relationships, and parenting support. Playgroups are unique in that they address the social and developmental needs of both parents and children simultaneously. This project focuses on the first one thousand days of life, critical to a child’s positive life trajectory. It will enhance children’s nurturing relationship with their primary caregiver, as their "first teacher," building resilient children.
